At the present stage of development only two are required :(i) and (ii) prior to each blow to monitor billet temperature after each blow to monitor the maximum values of impact velocity, deformation and load, these being obtained by feeding the analogue signals through hardwired peak hold circuits rather than by software. The signals T and T defined previoo sly are used to provide inie~to the process controller which in turn generates the channel select and digitma~ initiation signals appropriate for (i) and (1i), respectively.
5 is the most suitable for mould preform design [31. Thus a critical rib height to width ratio can be entered during the mould design process and if this value is exceeded, the rib is reduced to a lower profile of equivalent area. The material may be added to the base and/or upright portion of the 'L' elements at the choice of the designer (Figure lIb). In this way the designer is free to try several alternative mould cross section designs before choosing that considered the most appropriate. 35 CONCLUSIONS A system of programmes has been developed for the computer aided design of the preforms of certain classes of long forgings produced on drop hammers.
KNIGHT The longitudinal profile of the fuller can have several forms, but in general the crowned fuller shown in Figure 2 has been found to give the least problems in production [41 and this form has been used in the design procedure outlined below. The general design features are as shown in Figure 2 and the "length of bite" corresponds to the length of bar to be drawn down at each stage. There is obviously a physical lower limit on the length of bite possible and, for example, if a large reduction in sectional area is fequired, the drawn down portion may represent a very short length in the original bar stock.
