Hermann is next shown in his hospital bed at an asylum playing cards, as the three, seven and ace float by, while an image of the Countess watches over him. Although inter-titles are employed in these scenes, they are unnecessary as Hermann’s insanity is shown completely by the visuals. These last scenes of Pikovaya dama are the most inventive and engrossing moments in the film, showing the potential the production had, if only the same amount of creativity were used in the remainder of the feature.

The payoff for these scenes occurs when Edgar looks under the piano, where Carl’s remains have been placed under the floorboards. The floorboards themselves are pulsating, as if Carl’s beating heart (which is then as loud as it has ever been heard in the film) is pushing the wood up and down, a true moment of horror, unexpected by any reader of Poe. However, the filmmakers did not end the horror there.
