Man könnte sogar die Persönlichkeit einer Katze annehmen, wie es Paul Gallico tat in seinem Buch Miau sagt mehr als tausend Worte, Geständnisse einer Katze. Viele Haken peinigen den Schreibenden eher im Kopf als auf dem Papier. Er wird langsamer oder hält an, ohne recht zu wissen, was da los ist. Oft überkommt ihn ein vages Gefühl von Unsicherheit, er meint abzudriften, die Geschichte ist nicht mehr gut oder überzeugend. So war mir einmal kurze Zeit zumute, als ich Der Geschichtenerzähler schrieb und an die Stelle kam, wo Alicia, die Ehefrau, so verstört wurde, dass sie sich von der Felskante hinabstürzte.

Die Auf-Punkte wurden mit gewissen Ereignissen der Geschichte beschriftet. Dieses Verfahren zwingt den Schriftsteller, die Folge der Ereignisse im Hinblick auf den ganzen Ablauf zu sehen. Man könnte bei den Punkten auch provisorische Seitenzahlen anbringen - so ließe sich wenigstens ablesen, wo man bei einem bestimmten Punkt der Geschichte angelangt sein sollte. Ich mache es mir zur Gewohnheit, am Ende meines Arbeitstags über das Pensum des nächsten Tages nachzudenken. Wahrscheinlich bin ich etwas müde und froh, wenn die acht Seiten, oder wie viel immer, geschafft sind.

Das liegt daran, dass ich bei dem ganzen Projekt mein Gehirn zu benutzen versuche anstatt einer unbewussten Kraft, vor allem aber daran, dass das Buch keinen Handlungsfaden hat, der mich durch den kleinen Irrgarten leitet. Wenn mir das bei einem Roman passierte, dann wüsste ich: es kommt daher, dass ich die unmittelbar vor mir liegenden Ereignisse nicht sehe (ich würde dann aufhören und mir lieber die nächsten dreißig oder vierzig Seiten überlegen), oder auch daher, dass ich einen oder mehrere der Personen zwinge, etwas zu tun, was ihnen gegen den Strich geht.
