    The valve trombone enjoyed its greatest popularity in the 19th century when the technology of rotary valve and piston valve instruments was developing rapidly.     To the best of Don's knowledge, however, Grinnell Brothers never produced their own trombones. It started off as a straight 8H from around 1957 (700,000 serial with half moon engraving) and somewhere along the way, a thayer valve was added to it as well as a removable straight neck pipe (which I assume to be the original).
